Sally’s Beans

The Herald, Grand Forks, North Dakota

This dish is basically “baked beans” but with added ingredients that elevate it to the status of an entrée. Mom no longer made ordinary baked beans after she found this recipe!

 

One lb. ground beef

One medium or large onion

½ lb. bacon

¾ cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon mustard

salt to taste

2 teaspoons vinegar

½ cup catsup

16 oz. can pinto beans

16 oz. can kidney beans

16 oz. can Great Northern beans

 

Optional: add 8 oz. can butter beans or lima beans

Optional: exchange 16 oz. black beans for Great Northern

 

  Render beef and bacon in frying pan with chopped onion and drain before adding to recipe.

 

  Combine all ingredients and bake 1 ½ hours at 350 degrees, or

simmer in crock pot or on stove all afternoon. The aroma will fill the 

whole house!
